Adeyanju to Senator Natasha: Provide Proof of Sexual Harassment Claims Against Akpabio

Human rights lawyer and activist, Deji Adeyanju, has urged Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, to present concrete evidence supporting her allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Adeyanju emphasized that without verifiable proof, the claims would remain mere accusations.

Akpoti-Uduaghan recently alleged that Akpabio made inappropriate advances toward her during a visit to his residence in December 2023. Following this, the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions reviewed her actions and recommended a six-month suspension, which the Senate approved.

The suspension includes locking her Senate office, withholding salaries and allowances, withdrawing security details, barring her from official duties, and restricting access to the National Assembly premises.

Addressing journalists on Friday, Adeyanju remarked that the controversy had been overblown and suggested that the matter be taken to court for proper resolution. He urged Nigerians to focus on pressing issues, such as the Tax Reform Bill and its impact on low- and middle-income earners.

He also questioned why the same lawmakers involved in this dispute did not oppose anti-people policies of the current administration.

“The issue has been dragged for too long. I believe the parties should go to court and resolve it. Meanwhile, Nigerians should focus on stopping the passage of the Tax Reform Bill, which is far more critical than this controversy,” Adeyanju stated.

He further pointed out that there was no public outrage when lawmakers shared cars, money, and budget allocations.

“I also believe that since Senator Natasha has made these allegations, she should provide credible evidence to support her claim, especially since the Senate has denied her a fair hearing.

"It’s simple. The Senate President has denied the allegation. If there are messages or any proof, she should make them public. After all, the burden of proof lies with the accuser. Why protect him if he is guilty?” he added.
